"What?" Cyrus grunted in an angry whisper. "You think I ate him? I admit I've been a little hungry lately" |

"A little?" Kyna broke in. "You can't be referring to those blood burgers you've been shoving down?" |

|

"So I like rare hamburgers," he hissed. "Big fucking deal. If the paper said the guy had been chopped up with a Veg-O-Matic, you think I'd accuse you of having him for dinner just because you like salads?" |

Kyna laughed in spite of her self. |

|
|

"But, Russ. You've got to admit, you've been acting so weird lately. We haven't even . . ." Her voice dropped to a whisper. "We haven't even made love in days." |

Blood rushed into Cyrus's face as he hurriedly looked around to see if anyone had overheard her remark. Then he caught himself and shook his head and silently laughed at himself. |

Bad enough if people think you're a cannibal, but Heaven help you if anyone thinks you're a lousy lay. |

"Kyna honey, this whole trip has just been one long roller-coaster ride through Fantasyland. First, you got your attack by the disappearing wolf and your muggersboth living and dead. Then you got those lizard things trying to get revenge for twenty generations of American Tourister luggage and ladies' pumps. And you think this newspaper story is bizarre?" |

Kyna seemed to be thinking it over. |

"Okay, so maybe you're right," she admitted after a while. "But I'm warning you . . . if I find you running around without your clothes one more time"she reached across and took his hand"I'm slapping a chastity belt on you for the duration of the trip." |

It was ten minutes to five in the afternoon when they passed the Sausalito exit and started across the Golden Gate Bridge. On their left, across the bay, was the citySan Franciscospread out like a multilayered wedding cake with the elongated pyramid of the Transamerica building for a topper. |
